Happier people and people who had a more feminine appearance were more likely to be considered trustworthy. Clearly, people were not making though-through and conscious decisions in such a quick snapshot. However, it tells you that simply by smiling, you can make yourself seem more trustworthy – even if you are not!

It might seem counter-intuitive to think that you can gain a first impression of someone’s intelligence. Surely, this is something that you glean over a period of time and from conversation? However, work conducted at Loyola Marymount University points in the other direction. According to their study, speaking expressively from the outset of a meeting helps to create the first impressions of cleverness. In addition, eye contact is crucial. The study revealed that looking directly at another person when meeting conveyed a certain degree of intelligence. Generating an Impression of Success
In another academic study, it was found that first impressions could be generated of success when people were asked to give feedback on pictures of men. Those who were wearing tailored suits in the images – as opposed to those dressed in off-the-peg versions – were thought of as more successful in the sample. The study was conducted in the UK and Turkey and the same results seemed to apply regardless of the culture that was being studied. The images were shown to participants and what is quite astonishing is that people made their judgements on whether the man in each picture was a success or not within a period of just five seconds.
