Food is not only a necessary source of energy for your body. It can also help you get through a difficult moment – who has never dug into a tub of ice cream after a hard breakup or just a rough day at the office? Food can also be a fun way to discover new cultures. And some foods, well they can be downright weird. Each year sees new food trends, some more strange than others. Here are our top six weird food trends at the beginning of 2019.
Often thought of as just that green thing around our California rolls, seaweed is so much more. It is healthy, gluten-free, and vegan so it is basically one of the best new food trends. You can find it dried, roasted, with spices, and flavored. A great alternative to chips when you’re craving something salty, seaweed is also chock-full of nutrients. Vitamins A, C, B-12, calcium, iodine, potassium, selenium, iron, and magnesium – sea vegetables pack a punch! Do watch out that there isn’t too much salt added as seaweed naturally contains a lot of sodium. The shorter and more natural the ingredient list, the better.
Avocado Ice Cream
Avocados are THE millennial food. It has become such a staple food that it is found in many meals and now ice cream! You can even buy it in the grocery store. Famous chefs and other celebrities are making their own. The New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady shared his recipe with fans, and it is quite simple:

- ½ cup raw cashews
- ½ cup coconut meat
- 1 ½ cup pitted dates
- 1 cup raw cacao powder
- 1 ¼ cup water
Blend in a blender until smooth, freeze until it reaches desired thickness, then enjoy!

The Bagel Store in Brooklyn, New York, began serving rainbow-colored bagels 20 years ago. However, it is only in the last couple of years that they became a viral sensation, thanks in part to a video showing how they’re made and in part due to social media such as Instagram and Pinterest. Now everyone seems to want to try making their own! If you want to try the original and you’re in the US, you can go to the bakery in Brooklyn or even get one shipped to you anywhere in the country. And the best way to enjoy it? With a funfetti cream cheese spread of course!
The Bagel Store’s rainbow bagels can also be ordered covered in edible glitter. Yes, glitter. And so can pizza, cake, doughnuts, macarons, meringues, lattes and even beer and cocktails! Thanks to Instagram, people are dousing their food with glitter to make it more appealing in photos. It appears to be a continuation of the rainbows and unicorn trends that are everywhere on social media. If you are going to try it yourself, it’s important to make sure you use “edible” glitter and not “nontoxic” or “for decorative purposes only.” But why not enjoy a magical treat from time to time?
Pizza Wedding Bouquets
Are you planning a wedding or attending one this year? Instead of using flowers that will just wilt afterwards, why not carry a pizza bouquet and enjoy it after walking down the aisle? The Villa Italian Kitchen chain began this trend last year and each bouquet takes five hours to put together. Men, don’t feel left out – you can have a pizza boutonniere to match. Just watch out for the grease, especially if you are renting your tux.
Chickpeas + tahini + dates + bananas + almond milk = a milkshake? Many people consider hummus a savory snack to be enjoyed as a dip or spread on a sandwich. However, hummus has branched out onto the dessert menu in the past few years. And hummus milkshakes are surprisingly good and refreshing. If an original, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, or butter pecan-flavored milkshake doesn’t appeal to you? Why not try another hummus dessert like brownie batter? Vegan and gluten-free, it’s made with chickpeas, coconut oil, cocoa powder & chocolate ships, rice milk, and cinnamon.
Food trends can begin in anyone’s kitchen. All it takes is a bit of creativity and plenty of social media posts to get your idea out there. What do you have in mind?
