The Roulette Wheel

The Centerpiece of the Roulette Game

The roulette wheel is a marvelously simple yet elegant piece of mechanical engineering. The roulette wheel is basically a large bowl that spins on its axis. The interior walls of the bowl slant downward to the numbered "pockets," into which the roulette ball ultimately comes to rest. The pockets are alternately colored red and black — except for the "zero" pockets, which are green — and each pocket symbolizes a number.

A standard casino roulette wheel is made of polished wood and is nearly 90 centimeters (3 feet) in diameter and weighs about 45 kilograms (100 pounds).

The numbers on the roulette wheel are not in sequential order, but neither are they completely random. To the contrary, they are arranged in such a way as to create a harmonious balance of red and black, odd and even, and high and low numbers.

The American Roulette Wheel

The American Roulette wheel has 38 pockets: 0, 00, and 1 through 36. The 0 and 00 pockets are green, while the other 36 pockets are evenly divided between red and black.

The American Roulette wheel has the following characteristics:

  • The numbers face the outside of the wheel.
  • Red and black numbers alternate.
  • Usually, pairs of odd numbers alternate with pairs of even numbers. For example, note the following sequence of numbers: 3, 15, 34, 22, 5, 17, 32, 20. You see two odd numbers, two even, two odd, two even.
  • The 0 and 00 are opposite each other.
  • Every red number is opposite a black number.
  • Every odd number is opposite the next higher even number. For example, 11 is opposite 12.
  • Most numbers are part of a pair, with one number in between them. The sum of each pair is either 37 or 39. For example, in the sequence of numbers noted above, you can see the pairs 3+34, 15+22, 34+5, 22+17, 5+32, and 17+20.

The European Roulette Wheel

The European Roulette wheel has 37 pockets: 0, and 1 through 36. There is no 00 on the European Roulette wheel.

The European Roulette wheel exhibits the following patterns:

  • The numbers face the inside of the wheel.
  • Red and black numbers alternate.
  • The semi-circle to the right of the 0 has nine high red numbers and nine low black numbers.
  • The semi-circle to the left of the 0 has nine low red numbers and nine high black numbers.

Biased Roulette Wheels

Every gambler dreams of finding a biased roulette wheel. If you are lucky enough to find one, it could make you wealthy. Unfortunately, you are unlikely to find one.

A biased roulette wheel is one that, due to some mechanical flaw, allows a particular number to win more often than random probability would indicate. There are many factors that could cause a biased roulette wheel: the wheel itself could be unbalanced; the roulette table could be not level; frets could become worn so that the opening to one pocket is slightly larger than the openings to the other pockets. Any of these factors could cause a roulette number to win more often than the expected 1-out-of-37 or 1-out-of-38 times that the laws of probability predict.

If you do get lucky and find a biased wheel, by all means take advantage of it. Gamble and win on the favored number while you can. That's what Joseph Jagger did, and he became a wealthy man by it. Be warned, however, that your odds of being so lucky are quite slim. The casinos check their roulette wheels often and meticulously, and any biases are corrected as soon as they are discovered.

By the way, there is no such thing as a biased wheel in online roulette. This is because an online roulette casino does not use a real mechanical wheel that is subject to flaw. Instead, it uses a Random Number Generator that simulates the spins of a perfect roulette wheel. So unfortunately — or perhaps fortunately, if you happen to be into fair gaming — you will never be able to do a Joseph Jagger if you play roulette online. You'll just have to be content with trying your luck in a perfectly fair roulette game using a perfectly fair virtual roulette wheel. Which is really not such a bad thing, if you think about it.
