The Roulette Bets

One of the great appeals of the game of roulette is that there are so many different types of bets that you can never become bored playing roulette. There are even-money bets for those who seek small but steady winnings. There are long-shot bets for gamblers seeking big, albeit infrequent, payouts. To make the game even more exciting, you can place multiple bets on the same spin of the roulette wheel.

Before examining all the different types of roulette bets, it is a good idea to take a look at the roulette table layout. The roulette table features the 36 roulette numbers arranged in a grid of 3 columns and 12 rows. At the top of the grid are the zero and — in American Roulette only — double zero. Around the outside of the grid are spaces for bets such as red or black or odd or even.

There are three main categories of roulette bets: inside bets, outside bets, and call bets. As a general rule, the more numbers that are covered by your bet, the greater your chance of winning, but the lower the payout. Conversely, the fewer numbers covered by your bet, the higher the potential payout, but the lower your chances of winning. You can also make combination bets on the same spin of the roulette wheel to maximize your chances of winning or to minimize your risk.

Inside Bets

These bets are called Inside Bets because you make the bet by placing your chips inside the betting grid. These are generally higher risk — and higher payout — bets. In other words, these are bets for roulette players who really like to gamble.

Straight Up Bet: A bet on any single roulette number, including 0 or 00. You make this bet by placing your chips directly on the number. A winning bet pays out 35 to 1.

Split Bet: A bet on two adjacent roulette numbers. The numbers can be adjacent horizontally, such as 26 and 27, or vertically, such as 26 and 29. You make this bet by placing your chips on the line between the two numbers. A winning bet pays 17 to 1.

Street Bet: A bet on all three numbers in a horizontal row, such as 25, 26, and 27. You make this bet by placing your chips on the line at the end of the row. A winning bet pays 11 to 1.

Corner Bet or Square Bet: A bet on four numbers that form a square, such as 26, 27, 29, and 30. You make this bet by placing your chips on the corner where the four numbers meet. A winning bet pays out 8 to 1.

Line Bet: A bet on six numbers, comprising two rows of three numbers, such as 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30. You make this bet by placing your chips at the end of the two rows, on the line between them. A winning bet pays 5 to 1.

Five-Number Bet: A bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. This roulette bet can be made in American roulette only. A winning bet pays 6 to 1.

Outside Bets

Outside bets are placed in the various betting areas around the outside of the betting grid. They are generally lower risk — and lower payout — bets.

Column Bet: A bet on an entire vertical column of twelve numbers. A winning bet pays 2 to 1.

Dozen Bet: A bet on either the first dozen (numbers 1-12), second dozen (numbers 13-24), or third dozen (numbers 25-36). A winning bet pays 2 to 1.

Color Bet: A bet on either the red or the black numbers. A winning bet pays out 1 to 1.

Odd/Even Bet: A bet on either the odd or the even numbers. A winning bet pays 1 to 1.

Low/High Bet: A bet on either the low numbers (1-18) or the high numbers (19-36). A winning bet pays 1 to 1.

Call Bets

Call Bets are found only in French Roulette. They are bets on combinations of numbers, based on the position of the numbers on the roulette wheel. In addition, there are Call Bets based on the final digit of the roulette numbers.

In online French Roulette, you place a Call Bet by clicking the Call Bet button. This brings up a menu that lists all the possible Call Bets, along with an explanation of which numbers are included in each Call Bet and how many chips are needed to place the bet. To place your bet, select the Call Bet you want and then click "Add to Table." Hence, there is no need to memorize the Call Bets.

Voisins du Zero (Neighbors of Zero): This is a 9-chip bet on the 17 numbers that lie between 25 and 22 on the roulette wheel, with 0 in the center.

Tiers du Cylindre (Third of the Wheel): This is a 6-chip bet on the 12 numbers that lie on the opposite side of the wheel from 0.

Orphelins (Orphans): This is a bet on the eight numbers that lie in the two thin slices of the wheel that are not covered by either the Voisins or the Tiers. It is a 5-chip bet.

Finales en Plein: This is a bet on all numbers ending in a particular digit. For example, Finales en Plein 4 is a bet on 4, 14, 24, and 34.

Finales a Cheval: This is a bet on all numbers ending in either of two digits. For example, Finales a Cheval 4/5 is a bet on 4, 5, 14, 15, 24, 25, 34, and 35.
