How to Online Red Dog: Rules and Strategy

Red Dog is a fun online casino card game in which you have two related goals. The first is to draw a third card that fits within the “Spread” between your first two cards. A Look at the Virtual Red Dog Table

If you take a look at the virtual Red Dog table, you will notice three basic elements.

At the top, there are three big squares, designed to hold three playing cards.
In the middle, there is a grid indicating “Spread” and “Pays”.
And at the bottom, there is a betting circle divided into “Bet” and “Raise”.

As you will see, each of these sections of the virtual Red Dog table plays an integral part in your online Red Dog game.

Playing Red Dog Online

To play Red Dog online, you first use the Plus and Minus buttons to select the size of your bet. Your initial bet will appear in the Bet portion of the betting circle.

After you have placed your bet, you click the Deal button. Two cards will be dealt to the left and right squares, leaving the middle square empty for the time being. A dog-faced marker will immediately jump onto the grid and indicate your “Spread” and the winning payout.

The Spread is simply the number of cards that could fit consecutively between the two dealt cards. Between 5 and 8 there is a Spread of two: a 6 or a 7. Between 5 and 10 there is a Spread of four: 6, 7, 8, 9. Since an ace always counts as high card, the largest Spread is eleven, between deuce and ace. Between consecutive cards, such as 5-6, or a pair, such
as 5-5, there is no Spread at all.

Now, after examining the cards and the spread, you must choose to Call or Raise. If you Call, your bet stays as it is. If you Raise, an additional bet, equal to your first bet, is placed in the Raise portion of the betting circle, giving you twice as much money on the table and the chance to win twice as much but also the risk that you could lose twice as much.

After you Call or Raise, a third card is dealt into the middle rectangle. If that third card is within the Spread, you win at Red Dog online.

Winning at Red Dog Online

You win at Red Dog online if your third card falls within the Spread between your first two cards. And how much you win depends on the size of your initial bet, on whether you doubled your bet by Raising, and on the size of the Spread.

A Spread of one pays 5-to-1 on your bet.
A Spread of two pays 4-to-1 on your bet.
A Spread of three pays 2-to-1 on your bet.
All Spreads of four through eleven pay 1-to-1 on your bet.
If the first two cards are consecutive, and the Spread is therefore zero, the game is considered a tie and your bet is returned to you.

If the first two cards are a pair, the Red Dog game is also considered a tie. There is, however, one exception, and it is a good one. If the third card matches the pair, thus creating Three Of A Kind, you win a big 11-to-1 Red Dog jackpot.

Online Red Dog Strategy

When you play online Red Dog, you of course have no control over the deal of the cards. You do have control, however, over the size of your bets, and that’s where Red Dog strategy comes into play. The object of online Red Dog strategy is to Call and Raise appropriately in order to keep your losses small and your winnings big and thus to come out ahead over the long run of playing in the online Red Dog casino.

The online Red Dog experts recommend following these guidelines for the optimal Red Dog strategy:

Raise if the Spread is 1, 2, or 3. These are difficult bets to win, but the big payouts make it worth taking the risk.

Call if the Spread is 4, 5, or 6. It’s not worth risking your money for the sake of an even-money payout on these bets.

Raise if the Spread is 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11. With these Spreads, you are likely to win more than half the time, giving you a statistical advantage over the house.

Of course, it’s your money and you’re free to make your own decisions based on how lucky feel on a particular day. But still, these are good guidelines to keep in mind if you want to come out ahead over the long run of online Red Dog play.
