European Roulette is a casino game of chance that uses a roulette wheel and a betting grid. The croupier spins the roulette wheel in one direction and tosses in a little ball in the opposite direction, and the players gamble on which of the little numbered pockets the roulette ball will land in.

The European Roulette wheel has 37 pockets: a single zero (0) and the numbers 1 through 36. Each number is colored red or black (except for the zero, which is green). The European Roulette wheel differs from the American Roulette wheel, which has both a single zero (0) and a double zero (00), for a total of 38 pockets. The odds of winning at roulette are therefore better in European Roulette, since the probability of hitting your number is 1 out of 37 instead of 1 out of 38.
To play European Roulette, you first place your bet or bets by placing your chips on the appropriate area of the roulette table, corresponding to the type of bet you want to make. There are two main categories of roulette bets. Inside bets are bets on a single number, or on a small group of two, three, four, or six numbers. You win at European Roulette if the winning roulette number, as determined by the spin of the roulette wheel, matches a number that you have bet on. The amount of your winnings depends on how much you bet and what type of roulette bet you made. The biggest roulette payout — 35 to 1 — comes if you bet on a single number and that number wins. The smallest payout — 1 to 1, or even money — is when you bet on a group of eighteen numbers, such as all the odd or even numbers or all the red or black numbers, and the winning roulette number is one of the numbers within that group.
The Advantage of Playing European RouletteThe advantage of playing European roulette, as opposed to American roulette, is that the single-zero European roulette wheel increases the player's odds of winning at roulette. For example, if you bet on a single number, your odds of winning are 1 out of 38 (2.6%) in American roulette and 1 out of 37 (2.7%) in European roulette. If you bet on all the red or black numbers, your odds of winning are 18 out of 38 (47.4%) in American roulette and 18 out of 37 (48.6%) in European roulette. |
