All of the blackjack cards have their normal point value except for face cards, which are worth 10 points, and aces, which can be worth 1 or 11. The goal in a game of blackjack is to beat the dealer by getting a hand whose total point value is higher than the dealer's, but without going over 21.
At the start of a blackjack game you place your bet and receive two cards. The best hand in a game of blackjack is when your first two cards are an ace and a 10-point card. That's called a "Blackjack" and it pays out 3-to-2 on your bet.
If you don't have a Blackjack, it's time to play your hand. You can "Hit" and take another card, or "Stand" and stick with what you have. If you feel really confident you can "Double Down" and double the amount of your bet. If you feel really unconfident, you can "Surrender" and forfeit half your bet. If your first two cards are two of a kind, you can "Split" and play them as two hands.
The important thing to remember is that if your point total goes over 21, that's a "bust" and you automatically lose the blackjack game. There's a lot of skill and strategy involved in deciding whether to stand or hit or double down or surrender or split. But blackjack strategy is what makes the game so challenging and exciting.
