Baccarat is a casino card game in which you bet on the hand that you think will come closest to the magic number of 9. The two hands on the virtual baccarat table are called Player and Banker. But don't think of yourself as the Player, just because you are the person playing baccarat. The names of the hands are just names, and you are free to bet on the Player or the Banker or on a Tie.
The cards in a baccarat game are worth their normal face values, except that 10s and face cards are worth 0 and aces are worth 1. And when you add up the total value of a hand, only the last digit of the total counts. So a 2 and a 7 adds up to 9, the highest possible point total, and beats a 6 and a 7, which adds up to 13 and counts as 3.
You start your online baccarat game by placing a bet on Player, Banker, or Tie, and then you click the Deal button. Each hand receives two cards to start off with, and occasionally one or both hands will receive a third card as well. (To deal or not deal a third card is determined by a formula that you don't need to learn because the computerized dealer knows the formula and always does the right thing.) Then the point totals of both hands are calculated.
If you bet on Player and the Player's hand wins, or if you bet on Banker and the Banker's hand wins, you win the baccarat game and a payout.
If you bet on Player or Banker and the hands tie, you get your bet back without any profit or loss.
If you bet on Tie and the hands tie, you win a very nice 8-to-1 payout. A $10 bet on Tie can net you an additional $80 in winnings.
