Blackjack Betting Systems: The Paroli |
When gamblers discuss blackjack strategy, the serious theorists refer to the blackjack basic strategy or to blackjack card-counting. These blackjack strategies are the ones that work (at least much of the time).

But there are other "strategies," which are more like blackjack betting strategies rather than blackjack playing strategies. Whereas it's always recommended to play with the blackjack basic strategy — because it works — the jury is still out on the other systems, particularly progressive blackjack betting systems.
Progressive blackjack betting systems can be divided into two kinds, positive and negative. Both schools of thoughts have their fans; both have plusses and minuses. The Martingale system is perhaps the best-known negative betting system (whereby if you win you keep your bet steady, but if you lose you increase your bet). The Paroli progressive betting system is a "positive" system, and can be viewed as the Anti-Martingale.
In the Paroli blackjack betting system, you start with betting the minimum bet. If you win the first hand you increase your next bet, instead of decreasing your next bet. If you lose, you go back to your original bet. Essentially, when you use the Paroli system, you are "pyramiding" your profits, building on the base of your successes and on the likelihood of hot streaks.
If you are going to use the Paroli blackjack betting strategy, it's wise to have a bigger plan before you sit down at the blackjack table. You need to look ahead when you use a progressive betting system. For instance, you should decide exactly how far you are going to increase your bets until you start the system over again. This depends on factors like the kind of blackjack game you're playing, the odds you're getting, and, of course, the amount of money you're playing with. |

How does the Paroli system work? Let's say you're playing at a blackjack table at which there is a $2 minimum. You place that minimum bet and you win $2 and so you're next bet is $4. If you win again, your next bet is $8, and so on. At some point — preferably a pre-determined point — you decide that the bet has gotten high enough (even if you keep winning) and you go back to that original bet and continue from there.
The Paroli system is a relatively conservative system; it does not require a large investment, especially because you set a point beyond which you're not willing to bet. The Paroli is a relatively consistent and stable system, especially compared to other systems, particularly the "negative" ones.
The Paroli progressive blackjack betting system — and any positive progressive systems, in fact — is designed to take advantage of hot streaks. The theory is that by raising your bets during a winning streak, you can win more than if you keep betting a flat amount. If you are lucky enough to hit a streak — a big IF — the Paroli betting system offers you a chance to win a large amount of money from a small initial stake. You need less capital when you use the Paroli since you are not constantly trying to make up for what you've lost. On the other hand — and there are always other hands with progressive blackjack betting systems — streaks are unpredictable and they can end as soon as they begin. In the long run, even with a positive blackjack betting system like the Paroli, you can lose your initial bankroll, especially if you're not careful.
