What is Baccarat?

Baccarat is one of the oldest casino card games and it has a reputation for being a glamorous game for rich gamblers. With the advent of online casinos, however, baccarat has become much more accessible. Now everyone can enjoy playing baccarat online.

Part of what makes baccarat a great game is that it's so simple. When playing baccarat, your decision is limited to deciding what kind of bet to make. Baccarat is fun to play and the baccarat rules are easy to learn.

How to Play Baccarat

Baccarat is a game of chance between "the player" and "the banker." You bet on which of the two hands dealt — the banker's or the player's — you think will have a value closest to 9. Do not assume that, because you are "playing" baccarat, you must bet on "the player." You are always free to bet on either the banker or the player. You can also choose to bet on a tie. Baccarat is played with one standard deck of cards.

In baccarat, two hands of two cards each are dealt on the table: the banker's hand and the player's hand. You simply bet on which hand you think will have a value closer to 9. According to the rules of baccarat, face cards and 10s have a value of 0; aces are worth 1; all other cards are worth their face value. If the value of the two cards totals 10 or more, then the first digit of the total is discarded. For example, if a 9 and a 5 are showing, the 1 is eliminated and the value becomes 4, not 14.

The baccarat rules dictate that, in some situations, a third card may be dealt. There is a series of conditions for when the player and/or the banker receives a third card. These are compulsory rules: unlike a blackjack player, a baccarat player has no choice as to whether to hit or stand. When the dust settles and the final baccarat cards are dealt, the hand closest to 9 wins.

How to Win at Baccarat

The highest total any baccarat hand can have is 9, as calculated according to the baccarat rules explained above. A two-card total of 9 is called a "natural" and cannot lose. An eight is the second-best hand. If both the player and banker are dealt identical hands, it's a tie - neither the banker nor the player wins, but whoever bet on a tie wins big.

Once the bets are made, the dealer turns over the cards. These are the possible ways of winning baccarat:

  • If you bet on the banker's hand and the banker's hand wins, you win even money minus a 5-percent "commission." (The commission is imposed because, according to the laws of probability, the banker's hands win at baccarat slightly more often than the player's hands.) So if you made a real money bet of $10, you will receive your $10 back plus an additional $9.50 as your baccarat winnings.

  • If you bet on the player's hand and the player's hand wins, you win even money with no commission. So if you made a real money bet of $10, you will receive your $10 back plus an additional $10 as your baccarat winnings.

  • If you bet on a tie and the two hands tie, you win a payout of 8 times your bet. So if you made a real money bet of $10, you will receive your $10 back plus an additional $80.

  • If you bet on either the banker's hand or the player's hand, and the two hands tie, your bet is returned to you. So if you made a real money bet of $10, you will receive your $10 back without winning or losing anything.

    Baccarat Terms and Definitions

The game of baccarat has its own special vocabulary. Here are some of the terms that baccarat players should know:

Banker's hand: One of the two hands in a baccarat game. The "banker" does not necessarily mean the casino.

Commission: A tax of 5 percent taken from a winning bet on the banker's hand.

European baccarat: A baccarat game in which the dealer is the banker and the casino finances the banker's hand.

Face cards: The jacks, queens, and kings of any suit. Face cards and tens have a value of zero under the rules of baccarat.

Player's hand: One of the two hands in a baccarat game. The "player" does not necessarily mean you, the person who is playing baccarat.

Punto Banco: Also known as American Baccarat.

Tie: The situation in which the total value of the banker's hand equals the total value of the player's hand. A winning bet on a tie provides the highest payout of any baccarat bet.
