Your goal in a game of baccarat is to predict which of the two baccarat hands will come closest to the high-point total of 9, or if the hands will tie.
Why is 9 the highest point total? Because under the baccarat rules, only the last digit of the total is counted. If a hand contains a 6 and an 8, it adds up to 14, you drop the 1, and the point total is 4.
The two hands in the baccarat game are called Player and Banker. But please remember that these names are just convenient labels for the hands. You are not "the player" and the casino is not "the banker". You may bet on the Player or on the Banker, whichever hand you think is likely to get the higher point total.
And don't forget, you can also bet on a Tie. With 8-to-1 payout odds, the Tie bet is where the big baccarat jackpots can be won.
